Les difficultés d'apprentissage chez l'adulte: la valeur heuristique des représentations symboliques

Résumé
La valeur des représentations pour l'étude de phénomènes reliés au fonctionnement humain et pour l'intervention éducative ou thérapeutique est largement reconnue. Dans cet article, nous examinons plus spécifiquement la valeur heuristique des représentations symboliques que des adultes en difficulté d'apprentissage nous ont confiées. Véritables synthèses des aspects cognitifs et affectifs de leur expérience, ces représentations permettent de dépasser les limites imposées par les définitions conventionnelles des troubles d'apprentissage, particulièrement en ce qui conceme les adultes. Nous verrons comment ces représentations donnent accès à la perception de la dynamique relationnelle qui s'instaure entre l'individu et son environnement social, à l'attribution et à l'évaluation du degré d'autocontrôle ainsi qu'à l'impact du problème sur l'édification du concept de soi.
There is a large consensus surrounding the value of representational materials for the study of human phenomena, including educational and therapeutic activities. This paper examines the heuristic value of symbolic representations for understanding the experience of adults with learning disabilities. Symbolic representations synthesize cognitive and affective components of experience into vivid images that reflect the dynamics of adults' interaction with their social environment, as well as their attribution style, their locus of control, and the impact of learning disabilities on the building of self representational concept.
